Mystery Artist #19 signed “Goudis” Found!

It’s been awhile since we’ve had a mystery artist.  Philippe has inquired about this piece of scrimshaw. It’s 57cm long, signed GOUDIS:

By the looks of it, it may be an “oosic” or “oosik” – the penile bone of a walrus (you can see other examples of unadorned oosik at boonetrading.com and here).

We’re currently not sure where Philippe had acquired it, but we’ll update this post with more information as we can.  Feel free to comment on this and if you know the mystery artist Philippe would be thrilled to get more information about them.

I’ve passed the information on to Philippe, and appreciate Emmanuel and Ashley taking the time to write!  Any information you feel you can share publicly would be of interest to all of our readers, but if you prefer private emailing, that’s okay, too.

Mystery Artist 18 – A Scrimshaw Bracelet

We had an inquiry regarding a bracelet recently which was purchased in Nantucket we’d like to share:

Returned from vacation on Nantucket Island.  I purchased a bracket from the Murphy’s store on Maine St.  It was lying in a case that had an original basket designed pendant by A. Doucette.  The clerk told me the bracelet was an A. Doucette design but that the oval shaped discs with ink designs of ship, whale, basket, island, schooner, ferry, lighthouse and Nantucket signed ship, were not of ivory  and she did not know what the composition was but not to get the bracelet wet.  I paid $82 plus tax for the item.  It is lovely but I would like to know what the white shaped ovals are made of.  Thank for you for any info.”

Due to internet issues she was unable to send the pics for quite awhile, so emails and possible solutions went back and forth. Meanwhile, I was in contact with Al Doucette, the former owner of “The Whale’s Tale” regarding some of his work both past and present, and when we finally resolved the photo issues I forwarded the pics to him:

Mystery Artist 18 Bracelet Front

“…Andrew,

That is my bracelet ! I have been doing this bracelet as a story bracelet for a few years in sterling and ivory….but last year I decided to make this one that I designed in base metal and plated and the inserts are cast in resin…if they look on the back I engraved Atlantic Originals and A. Doucette 2013.    I have done the story of nantucket ( that one ) and also the story of the New Bedford Whaler Charles W. Morgan that was restored at Mystic Seaport and sailed on its 38th voyage this summer…”

This had to be the fastest Mystery Artist we’ve had the pleasure of doing. Al is still very busy doing scrimshaw as well as carvings and sculpture and is difficult to pin down for an interview but as a scrimshander, patience comes with the territory.  Al has shared a number of pictures of his work with us and we’re working on putting up a page on the site to highlight his work.  We’ll add a link in the “Artists” page shortly so everyone can see the work of this truly prolific artist.

If you have a piece of scrimshaw that you need help identifying, send an email along with some high resolution pictures to “questions@scrimshaw.com”. We can’t guarantee such a fast turnaround, but we’ve found a number of artists and have been able to answer some questions about them.

Mystery Artist 17 – T. Donangelo

Clicking on the picture will bring you to the auction page. Scroll down there to see several more shots

A scrimshaw artist named T. DonAngelo has not only made this pair of grips, but had a catalog of work they had created and printed.  The name may be Trudy DonAngelo or Don Angelo, we’re not sure.  The flyers sometimes sell on auction, and we have an owner of a pair of gunstocks who would like to know more about this artist.  So far all we’ve found are the posters and the pics shown here.  Does anyone know the history of this artist and if they are still active?  Share your info in the comments below to help us find this mystery artist!

Mystery Artist 16 – Skip Powell (History Mystery)

Hunting Scene on mammoth ivory by Skip Powell in 1987This scrimshaw was done by the artist Skip Powell in 1987.  The owner is in search of more information about the artist and if they are still actively scrimshawing.  It depicts a hunting scene with hunters on horseback and hunting dogs in the foreground.  The brass plate says”Especially Commissioned for H.H.H.”.

Does anyone have any more information about this artist? This piece appears to be done on mammoth ivory. Leave a comment in the comment box if you know the whereabouts of the artist or any other information thay would prove helpful, and thanks for looking!

3/12/16 – Thanks, William – the work may indeed be from Skip Rowell.  About 5 minutes in, you can see an interview via Youtube. Would love to verify that this is indeed from this artist.

Mystery Artist #16 – Knight – FOUND!

Horse portrait on oval cabochon with the name KNIGHT in block lettersI could make a cheeky comment about this horse missing it’s knight, but we’re not giving up our blog for the comedy circuit.

We have an email from someone who has a beautifully scrimshawed horse on a pendant purchased in the Agoura California area in 1976 – 1977.  The name Knight is in block letters toward the bottom.  Its owner would love to find out more about the artist and if they are still creating scrimshaw, as well as any history about the piece.

Simply respond in the comments if you can help, it’s greatly appreciated by owners and artists alike.
